Kirit Chitara is a painter from Ahmedabad who specializes in a traditional art form called Mata Ni Pachedi. This art, also known as the “Kalamkari of Gujarat,” has been around for 300 years. Mata Ni Pachedi means “behind the mother goddess” and involves painting on cloth used in temples.
The Chitara family has been doing this art for seven generations, passing down their skills from father to son. They have a workshop in Vasna, Ahmedabad, where they work together on various projects.
Kirit Chitara is the youngest painter in his family. He’s passionate about keeping Mata Ni Pachedi alive. Besides painting, he also teaches at colleges and schools in Ahmedabad. He even teaches artists and students from around the world in his own workshop.
One of Kirit’s dreams is to exhibit his paintings outside of India, so more people can learn about and appreciate this unique tradition.
